Yellowtail Season is ON!!
The big yellowtails have arrived at La Paz!
We finally got a break after a long week of strong northern winds so we decided to try our luck with the yellowtail.
We hit one of my favorite spots that had been producing really good Cabrillas and Pargos lately not too far from La Paz, the conditions were more than perfect! Flat seas, clear, cold water and tons of bait fish near shore.
Only after 5 minutes of being on the water I spotted the first Yellowtail striking the bait ball, I could’ve taken the shot but I decided to wait, and it worked, he made one more pass right in front of me for a perfect stone shot right on the spine.
Day 2
We went out again to the same spot since the conditions were so perfect, this time we arrived late in the afternoon, the conditions were pretty much the same as the day before, tons of sardines, big cabrillas underneath the bait balls, sierra mackerel, small barracuda and Bonito striking the bait balls.
I spotted a couple of Yellowtails right outside the bait balls, they were too far for a good shot so I decided to wait again, 5 minutes later they came back and I took a shot at the one in front. First I thought I had stoned him, but after a few seconds he came back to life and fought like crazy for about 15 minutes.
Later on that day I saw 2 more big yellowtails but they were out of range. We also saw tons of medium cabrilla in the 10 – 15 lbs range but we were only after the yellows.
It looks like it is going to be a great year for JUREL! the season is just starting…
